At World Sleep 2025, international experts shared firsthand insights on what's broken and what's working in global OSA diagnosis. Hear the discussion on tackling missed diagnosis, challenging outdated norms and building new models of care.
Symposium introduction
Discussion: What are the main barriers for patient-facing clinicians around the globe?
Discussion: What actions do we need the sleep community to undertake to improve the current situation?
Discussion: If you could fix one thing related to sleep diagnosis, what would it be?
In this candid, cross-regional discussion, international clinical leaders challenged the status quo, questioned entrenched diagnostic norms, explored what’s failing current pathways and spotlighted scalable innovations reshaping access to care. Drawing from real-world experience across diverse health systems, this session spurred open dialogue on redefining how, where and for whom obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is identified. Concluding with forward-looking insights, the panel examined how to dismantle persistent, systemic barriers and move beyond outdated screening tools toward a more inclusive, efficient and impactful future for the missions of people living with undiagnosed OSA globally.
This discussion:
Critically assessed the limitation of traditional diagnostic metrics in identifying clinically meaningful OSA across different healthcare systems and geographies
Analyzed global approaches to improving OSA detection, including task-shifting, technology-enabled models and integration with cardiometabolic and primary care
Recognized persistent diagnostic bottlenecks across diverse systems, from workforce shortages to inequitable access to sleep testing
Envisioned future-forward strategies for addressing the underdiagnosis crisis head-on through innovation, interdisciplinary collaboration and system redesign
